Industry and innovation at ESS
The Industry and Innovation function is part of the Strategy Directorate of ESS. The function is led by Jimmy Andersen, Head of Industry and Innovation. In September 2020, Sarah Salman joined the team.
The Industry and Innovation team is responsible for developing and implementing ESS Innovation Strategy, working with internal and external stakeholders to increase the capability with industrial users, maximise the application of scientific and engineering technologies, and fuel the innovation culture at ESS. The team aims to enable the innovation potential of ESS and utilise opportunities emerging in the innovative ecosystem at and around ESS. The innovation strategy framework focuses on the value and impact of ESS and engages both up- and down-stream business models relative to innovation.
Below are selected highlights of the Industry and Innovation activities carried out during 2020 up to date:
- An innovation catalogue has been created based on interviews with more than 15 experts. The results will be presented in Deliverable D4.2: Strategic roadmap for technological upgrades of ESS. In addition, the information collected was used to draft a dynamic ESS Technical Innovation Catalogue that will serve as a valued source of information and references.
- Internal Innovation Board was established at ESS with members from across the Organisation.
- Industry Advisory Board (IAB) was established and will allow ESS to learn from the best.
- The first technology transfer project on “Non-Invasive Beam Profile Monitor” was kicked-off. Procedures and policies have been developed along the way.
- The Industry and Innovation function strategically uses Deliverables of BrightnESS² to reach the objective of Task 4.1 and to promote and influence an innovation culture at ESS.
- The team is working towards establishing innovative networks at the regional, national, European and global level.
- Via BrightnESS², the team supports the preparations for industrial users at ESS and encourages capacity building through collaboration.
