Paolo Mereu
Paolo Mereu is the In-Kind Field Coordinator for BrightnESS WP2 South-East Hub. He has a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering (Politecnico di Torino). He is a staff mechanical technologist at INFN since 2000, with experience in particle and nuclear physics detector design, integration, production and operation at CERN-LHC based experiments (ALICE and CMS) and in accelerator sub-system design and integration in international collaborations (IFMIF-EVEDA and ESS).
In BrightnESS, my role is to coordinate and keep track of the Italian In-Kind, with particular attention to scope, schedule and cost. In this task, I am assisted by collaborators in the various Work Units (INFN, Elettra-Sincrotrone and CNR). I also facilitate the selection of industrial partners, on a technical basis, for the procurement of components and I give an active contribution in writing technical specifications and contractual annexes in the call for tenders by the WUs.
As INFN is the representing entity of Italy to ESS, I have a regular interaction with the INFN Central Administration, in order to monitor and react to eventual risks of delays or issues related to public procurement procedures.
I really like the collaboration between the field coordinators of the various Hubs within BrightnESS WP2, and I consider it very valuable for ESS, because we all come with different backgrounds and we can share our knowledge and experience and give a proactive contribution to the ESS construction through the BrightnESS framework and network.
Personally, I see BrightnESS, where project management is deeply involved, as a great challenging opportunity for my professional growth. It is also a great privilege to have a complete and integrated view, throughout the different systems, components and services, of such a complex and big machine as ESS.
