Presentation of the ESS at the Hungarian Nuclear Society meeting
In Hungary, the Hungarian Nuclear Society is the unique civil society in the nuclear field. The Society has more than 700 members, compiling different fields: scientists, engineers, professors, teachers, students, industrial partners connected the nuclear and fusion areas.
The Hungarian Nuclear Society considers its public utility tasks to be development of nuclear culture and promotion of peaceful use of nuclear technologies. The society works for advancing new opportunities revealed by nuclear research and contribute to the protection of the environment and the improvement of the level of the living to a greater extent.
On 5 April 2018, in the frame of a board meeting, the BrightnESS representatives from the Budapest Neutron Centre met with leaders of the Society for an informative discussion about the ESS and the role of BrightnESS. Research possibilities and the existing and planned instrumentations were presented as a high-efficiency tool for material science applications.
The participants were interested in the high-level experimental possibilities which will be available at ESS. The scientists and engineers were interested in material structural studies with different conditions. The most important scientific question is connected to the different metal parts of the nuclear infrastructure: steel characterization, and corrosion studies, aging tests on the exposed components. Nowadays, nuclear engineers are interested in doing micro/nano-characterizations of the reactor vessel materials and the charateristics of fuel materials (exp. zircons) under service conditions. It was a useful discussion about the possible in-situ material studies which would be more effective using ESS insured conditions.
Margit Fabian was invited to participate in the Annual General Meeting of the Society to give a broad overview of the ESS opportunities for the members of the Society. This Meeting will be held on 15 May.
