Students Were Researchers at INFN-LNS for a Day

On 20 March 2017 five former students of the higher Institute Ven. Ignazio Capizzi of Bronte (CT) successfully performed a measurement with a Hall effect probe on the proton source designed and realised at LNS for the European Spallation Source. The students were the winners of the Italian selection of the Beamline for Schools (BL4S’16) competition.

The experiment was carried out under the guidance of David Mascali, INFN researcher, and Lorenzo Neri, technologist at LNS and WP3 Deputy Leader of the ESS Project. Lorenzo Neri explained to the students the relevance of beam stability for the operation of the ESS Linac. The measurement did not affect other ESS-related activities and showed that the PS-ESS source can be operated by non-experts.
