Fernando Sordo is the head of ESS-Bilbao Target Division and responsible for the Spanish in-kind contribution on the Target Area. His team is leading the technical work on the Target Wheel, Shaft and Drive unit, the monolith vessel, the tuning beam dump, proton beam entrance window. He has been involved on ESS project since 2009.
- My daily work includes identifying and reporting on problems on the ESS target development. I have participated in the Design Review of the components for the target and my team and I work on a daily basis to look for solutions and reduce risks related to the target development.
I think that BrightnESS is a good initiative to support all the ESS partners. It allows us to have all the key people involved in the building process of this big infrastructure – from institutes to industry. The project also allows us to get publicity for the work we are doing in mass media and other outreach activities. Our work is for the users and we should communicate our solutions and the progress of the project along the way. We need to get the science community involved and get them to come to Lund.
From my point of view, there will be two major challenges within BrightnESS; the first is that we are designing a completely new component. We are continuously doing research, sharing ideas etc. to solve the challenge. The other interesting challenge is the collaboration of the 18 partner institutes. We all bring different ideas and approaches to our work, which puts demand on the management of interfaces between the different Work Packages.
