Promoting industrial use of research infrastructures
On the 25 October, AREA Science Park, Elettra Sincrotrone and BrightnESS welcomed representatives of twelve high-tech companies to discuss the benefits of using neutron for industrial R&D.
The meeting was organized in the framework of Open Lab, a national project to that brings together industry and research to develop industrial applications of X-ray and neutron sources.
Through presentations by companies and researchers involved in collaborative R&D projects, the meeting provided technical information about the advantages offered by large-scale RIs, like ESS.
Presentations showcased ongoing R&D projects, such as the use of imaging technologies applied to the analysis of polyurethane foams (a joint Open Lab project between AEP Polymers Srl and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste), the use of micro- and nanotechnology applied to microbiology (a joint Open Lab project between Alifax srl, Udine, and CNR-IOM Istituto Officina dei Materiali).
In order to inform invited industries of the opportunities that will become available in the next few years at ESS, Elettra scientist Barbara Rossi, gave a general introduction and a detailed presentation of available neutron techniques and their applications in the field of biomedicine, superconductors, energy and environment.
The event is part of a series of initiatives promoted by BrightnESS to assess the industrial use of European RIs and to inform ESS’ engagement strategy with potential industrial users.
A report of the qualitative assessments conducted in all the BrightnESS regional hubs will be distributed in early 2017.
