Delegation from Oskarshamn Visits ESS
The meeting was a follow up of an earlier visit of ESS to Oskarshamn, which took place in October 2015 on the initiation of NOVA, the Municipality of Oskarshamn and SKB.
During the visit of the Oskarshamn delegation to Lund, ESS staff was briefed about technical industry in Oskarshamn, the process of decommissioning nuclear energy production, and the planning for Clink - SKB’s future plant for spent nuclear fuel. The Municipality of Oskarshamn hosts the first commercial nuclear power plant built in Sweden as well as the Central Interim Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel (Clab) operated by SKB. The delegation also presented the broad technical and scientific collaboration on energy and environmental issues between the Municipality of Oskarshamn and SKB through their joint project NOVA R&D launched in 2007.
During the full day program, ESS staff briefed the delegation about progress of the ESS project and the structure and governance of the organization following its transition to an ERIC. Regional development, environmental safety and radwaste management were an important part of the agenda. The group also exchanged views on collaboration opportunities and grant involvement under the Euratom research program. The program finished with a walking tour of the ESS construction site.
The visit of the delegation from Oskarshamn took place shortly before a joint trilateral workshop, which will be held in Stockholm on 20 May with the aim to provide platform for representatives of ESS, MYRRHA (Multi-purpose Hybrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications) and relevant actors in Oskarshamn to discuss opportunities for scientific and technical collaboration.
