Opportunities for UK Industry to engage with ESS
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, United Kingdom (map)
STFC, in partnership with BrightnESS, are hosting an event focused on how UK industry can engage with the European Spallation Source (ESS). The event will be held at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) with optional afternoon sessions at RAL and RACE, Culham Science Centre on Tuesday 22nd November 2016. The morning session is open to UK industry only whilst the afternoon session at RACE is open to all EU companies interested in the active cells work package.
The European Spallation Source is a research infrastructure committed to the goal of building and operating the world leading facility for research using neutrons. Once constructed, in Lund, Sweden, it will provide new opportunities for researchers in a broad range of scientific areas including life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics. It will be an accelerator-based facility producing neutrons for a large array of advanced instruments. Construction started in July 2014, aiming at the source producing first neutrons around 2020.
The UK is a partner in construction of the ESS alongside 15 other European countries, and has committed significant funding for construction. STFC is managing the UK contribution to the ESS, which includes in-kind contributions to ESS construction.
In the morning session, from 10:00 – 13:30, there will be a series of talks which will cover the opportunities for UK industry to engage with the ESS as well as providing a general introduction to the ESS and the UK’s involvement.
There will be two optional afternoon sessions available for delegates:
- A visit to ISIS (limited numbers) and/or networking with key ESS staff and some UK work package leaders. Delegates will remain at RAL for this session;
- Or, a visit to RACE at Culham Science Centre for a session focused on the Active Cells for handling radioactive materials work package. This session will include presentations by key staff, a tour of RACE and networking. Transport will be available to transfer delegates from RAL to RACE if needed. In line with OJEU procurement rules, this session is also open to EU industry.
