2020 LENS Colloquium to showcase mission-based research with neutrons

The League of advanced European Neutrons Sources and BrightnESS² are pleased to invite you to the 2020 LENS Colloquium: How neutrons contribute to mission-based research. The event will be held on Tuesday, the 11th of February, in the magnificent reading room of the Bibliothèque Solvay in Brussels. The afternoon colloquium will be held in advance of the following day’s BrightnESS² Annual Meeting and General Assembly. The three-hour programme for the afternoon of February 11th includes both scientific and policy talks, along with a panel discussion. Confirmed participants include:

  • Adam Tyson: Head of Research and Industrial Infrastructures, DG RTD, European Commission

  • Allan Larsson: member of the Horizon Europe Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission Board; former Swedish Chief Negotiator for ESS; former Swedish Finance Minister

The short talks will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by the Commission’s Adam Tyson. Joining for the panel discussion will be Allan Larsson, a member of the Horizon Europe Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission Board, and the former Swedish Chief Negotiator for ESS and former Swedish Finance Minister. The programme closes out with a dinner at 19:00. 

The purpose of the colloquium is to showcase for LENS stakeholders the vital scientific contributions that research with neutrons will make in support of von der Leyen Commission’s Green Deal and the European Commission’s proposed €100 billion framework programme, Horizon Europe. 

Horizon Europe differs from all previous framework programmes by being mission-based. The Commission has defined five mission research areas, which will soon be refined into highly specific missions to be achieved within the constraints of the programme. The LENS Colloquium will bring together neutron scientists, LENS facility directors and Commission decision-makers in an intimate forum intended to facilitate the exchange of up-to-date knowledge and activities.

The LENS consortium was formed in 2018 to strengthen the position of European neutron science by building a collaborating ecosystem of neutron facilities. LENS is primarily an operational organisation, and has five active working groups investigating both strategic and technical synergies across its nine member facilities. As part of this work, LENS is coordinating the stance of large-scale neutron facilities relative to Horizon Europe.
