Margaret Armstrong as a Master of Science graduate has a background in medical science as well as a project management qualification from the European College Bruges. Margaret is a specialist in European Union project design, management and implementation. Over the past decade she has managed and administered an off-campus Research SME in Ireland and has worked on an extensive range of internationally funded projects under the EU’s Framework Programme 7 and for the World Bank and NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa's Development) among other sponsors. She has also acted as the co-rapporteur of workshop proceedings at an intergovernmental level for one of the United Nations system bodies. Her project management work has required problem-solving and analytical skills in a high- performance unit operating in a research-intensive environment. Specifically, her responsibilities included technical and financial administration; project coordination in a multidisciplinary environment, workshop planning and organisation, report writing; editing; specialist knowledge of EU financial rules and contractual obligations; as well as written and verbal presentation of project results.
Margaret moved to Sweden in January 2017 and took up a position as the Grants Administrator for ESS EU projects and national grants in March 2017. She really enjoys working with multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering teams at the cutting-edge of neutron science and in the delivery of the world's most advanced neutron source by 2023. Her role is at the intersection of the administrative and financial levels to ensure that the projects are monitored and delivered according to the project plan and implemented on the critical path to successful completion.
Margaret’s responsibilities as Project Manager of BrightnESS² is to act at the interface with the European Commission as the first point of contact for the 15 partners of the BrightnESS² consortium, including the General Assembly and the Steering board to ensure the successful delivery of the Project. She is very much looking forward to engaging with all the partners working together to ensure the progressive development and the long-term sustainability of the European neutron research landscape.
