Four scenarios for the Dutch Mobility System in 2050

In honor of her 183rd anniversary, TU Delft today presents four radical yet realistic scenarios for the future of the Dutch mobility system in 2050. Developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers called “The Mobilisers,” these scenarios serve as a strategic framework to help stakeholders in government, industry, and academia navigate the complex challenges surrounding mobility. The four scenarios and the accompanying report are now available online.

Tim van der Hagen: “A logical time to pass the baton”

Last week, the Supervisory Board announced its intention to change the current governance model as of January 2026. In the ‘new’ model, the combined positions of Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board will be separated again. A wise decision for the future of our university, agrees Tim van der Hagen. He will pass the baton during next year's Dies Natalis, after which the new governance model will take effect.

DNA motors found to switch gears

Scientists from Delft, Vienna, and Lausanne discovered that the protein machines that shape our DNA can switch direction. Until now, researchers believed that these so-called SMC motors that make loops into DNA could move in one direction only. The discovery, which is published in Cell, is key to understanding how these motors shape our genome and regulate our genes.

Caroline Katsman scientific figurehead of Dutch Climate Research Initiative

Professor of Oceans & Climate Prof. Dr. Caroline Katsman has been appointed as scientific figurehead of the Dutch Climate Research Initiative (KIN). As an internationally respected climate scientist, Caroline Katsman brings with her a large network and broad experience in applying knowledge from physical climate science to pressing societal issues.

New TU Delft governance model leads to changes in the Executive Board

Upon the departure of the Vice Rector Magnificus last year, a possible new governance model for TU Delft was discussed in the run-up to the recruitment of a new Executive Board member. It was considered whether the current combination of Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board (EB) was still appropriate, or whether these two positions should be assigned to two different EB members.

Hybrid test dune to measure erosion during storms

Last week, a hundred-metre-long test dune rose on the coast near Monster. A hybrid dune, consisting of a combination of sand and hard elements. Researchers from TU Delft are monitoring how different configurations erode during stormy weather conditions. This will allow hybrid dyke-dune structures to be designed more efficiently and safely in the future.

Advancements in neural implant research enhance durability

Neural implants contain integrated circuits (ICs) — commonly called chips — built on silicon. These implants need to be small and flexible to mimic circumstances inside the human body. However, the environment within the body is corrosive, which raises concerns about the durability of implantable silicon ICs. A team of researchers from the Bioelectronics Section led by Dr. Vasiliki (Vasso) Giagka, address this challenge by studying the degradation mechanisms of silicon ICs in the body and by coating them with soft PDMS elastomers to form body-fluid barriers that offer long-term protection to implantable chips. These findings not only enhance the longevity of implantable ICs but also significantly broaden their applications in the biomedical field. The paper on this project is published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.

Recognised for its innovative circularity portfolio, TU Delft wins Silver at the QS Reimagine Education Awards, highlighting its global impact on lifelong learning and sustainable transformation

The Waal attracting increasingly more water: a tipping point of the Rhine system?

Historical observations and model computations point to the Rhine system having crossed a tipping point. Since extreme peak flows in the 1990s, the Waal has gradually attracted more water at the Pannerdense Kop bifurcation. This is shown in research by TU Delft, Leiden University, Utrecht University, and Rijkswaterstaat.
